<Bean Introduction>
Antigua is now one of Guatemala's leading coffee producing regions. It is said that coffee was introduced in the mid-18th century by Catholic monks and missionaries. It is also said that Antigua was the first place where coffee trees were planted. The National Coffee Association of Guatemala. commonly known as ANACAFE. designates this region as "Traditional Antigua" and identifies it as one of Guatemala's eight leading coffee-producing areas. Located southwest of Guatemala City. the capital. it lies in a valley surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua Volcano. Fuego Volcano. and Acatenango Volcano. Coffee is cultivated in mineral-rich volcanic soil.
